Dealing with carpet odors

Stranger in Paradise writes:
When dealing with odors in carpets it pays to look at the ingredients of commercial odor removers. Bicarbonate of Soda and Sodium Bicarbonate are just another way to say baking soda. If your carpet smells bad, then spread the baking soda on the carpet and let it sit. The longer you can let it sit the better. Vacuum up the baking powder and the smell should be gone. If the odor persists then repeat the treatment. If it still smells then you can spray the carpet lightly with a white vinegar solution and let dry. Then use the baking soda again to remove the vinegar odor. It should be noted that Vacuum cleaners that use bags are quickly used when dealing with baking soda, so change the bag after vacuuming the baking soda.
