Take a small muslin (a thin cotton fabric) bag, fill it with basil, tie up and hang where flies are. If you don't have a cat, I'm told a little catnip in the bag as well will have a stronger effect. If you do have a cat the nip might drive them bonkers. Very very safe for children and adults to be around. Makes my kitchen smell like I'm cooking all the time.
